Screw MJ; Billy Mays is dead!

Happy Canada Day to all! I have decided, since I brought back a ton of maple fudge and such, that we should celebrate Canada Day, even if there are no Canada-themed bars in NYC (of which I know anyway).
Rather than write about the day’s significance and history (which, I don’t know, either), let me link you to a kinda interesting and sexy article about fucking in the great North.
I just returned from a trip to Western Canada, and while it didn’t make me feel particularly more sexually liberated, it was fun and there were, in fact, some bears…

Dun’ think I will be making it to the parade today (SOOOOOOO packed!), but props to all peoples and especially my pal, Marie, who will be marching in the Gay and Lesbian Marching Band (”the only thing gayer than marching band”—Foley)

Michael Jackson died today. Or, was it yesterday? I don’t know.
So, unless you live in a bunker, you probably already heard. I first heard on the news, and didn’t really have a reaction. Like I said, I think he died a long time ago.
There apparently was a candlelight vigil at Union Square last night. As icons go, I guess MJ was a big deal, but that guy, the 1950’s cute kid turned 1980’s chick magnet, disappeared sometime after he lost his pigment and got his face altered. It’s weird, because no one really had nice things to say about the man/thing he had become, but we all remember that he was great (and possibly sane) once. A big pop star that lost his mind and his color, and possibly all dignity…
I was originally going to do an SDJC comic about it, but I was caught somewhat unmoved.
I don’t know what people think about this in general, but I would be curious to get comments from readers, since my own reaction was surprising to me.
So, Victoria (city in West Canada) is gorgeous. I will probably add some pics of me feeding seals once I am home and not working with my netbook in a starbucks (The BF’s parents only have dial up internets, woah).
I had expected a few guest comics from people, but I guess this will have to do. GIMP is not the easiest thing to learn to use in 30 minutes, by the way, so doing the comic in color was kinda bust.
I went to a burlesque show heree, though, which was pretty cool. I will have more to say when I am not struggling with a tiny keyboard and a latte.
Thanks for reading!
So, our first MoCCA was really neat, mostly in that I met a ton of cool people from all over (even the netherlands!), who do and enjoy comics. At the onset, we got a great deal of help from Dern (Dernwerks), who shared our table, and Gary of Fleen, both of whom are veterans in the biz. It was very nice to have people come by the table and look at our stuff and laugh. I really appreciated the feedback, since I hadn’t done a comic-specific show before.
I was especially stoked to meet more people in the NYC area, including three cool cats of Comics Queens. I need to get a drink with them sometime and talk artz!
People there were generally awesome, and really excited to meet other comicers, share ideas and business cards, and even swap minis! Though I understand that a few people were reluctant to trade their comics, a huge, awesome, radical high-five to those that traded with me and others! Half the fun of a show like that is getting to see what other people are doing, as much as getting your own stuff out there! I came home with a stack of cool books by indie artists!
So far, I have read Adamantly Amorous, by Brian Lam, which is an adorable story about a nerdy dude who forgets to get a girlfriend. I also read Alisa Harris’s Counter Attack, a mini about her two whacky cats (and I see a lot of my monsters in here). As I read more of them, I will be writing about the ones I thought were especially cool/up my alley. I also hope that some of the people who read/dug either of my two books will let me know what they think!
I am now also very much into some new webcomics. I haven’t gotten through all of my notes, flyers, and business cards, but y’all should check out Sticky Comics, which is hi-lar-ious! I will continue linking to cool stuff as I find it. I am a bit slow going through links…
After the show on Saturday, we dragged two other exhibitors, Kiwi of Falling Dots and Brenson of Hell High NY out with us for Indian food (at a dive of questionable business practices) and then for a night of drinking with other artist friends of ours. I was wiped out by like 9 PM but stayed out till 11.
One negative that everyone noticed was that the armory had no atmosphere. Literally. The air was hot and did not move, as there were no windows to speak of, really. The second day, the MoCCA staff were kind enough to provide industrial fans at the entries, but still, the recycled air sucked the life energy right out of me. I even lost feeling in my legs after a while, and was so woozy I forgot my name once. I imagine this is probably why I, who seldom ever gets colds or flus, came down with a mega cold immediately after the festival.
All said, it was fantastic to do MoCCA, and I signed NERD up for a table at 2010’s festival.
We will also be doing SPX and (maybe) Howl this year, so stay tuned!
