What is in a name?

I came across this post at Webcomic Overlook today and was pretty surprised that the term “webcomics” bothers anyone. The medium isn’t that new, and with all the names we’ve used to describe them, webcomics seems to have stuck. This article is interesting, because El Santo has examples of where a small few find issue with adding the prefix “web” to the word “comics, as if it invalidates them as genuine comics.
Personally, I don’t think webcomics are vastly different in value than “printed” comics, aside from being free and not involving trees, but I don’t think calling them “webcomics” separates them from their tangible counterparts. Just like I don’t think calling small press “indie comics” cheapens them in any way. It’s a slightly more descriptive way of putting it to the reader: this is the way you’re going to get the comic and read it. Everyone can read it, and it’s free.
Honestly, if the term “webcomics” bothers you, don’t use it, but I am pretty proud of myself for doing a twice-weekly webcomic.
